MADE IN LAGOS (ALBUM) REVIEW

Made in Lagos by Wizkid was easily one of the most anticipated Nigerian album for the second half of 2020. It is also Wizkid’s fourth studio album. Wizkid literally drops an album every three years: 2011, 2014, 2017 and now 2020. So till 2023 [I guess] ‘fore fans get a new body of work.

There was raves all over the internet following IG stories from Wizkid’s producer and friends. Personally, I was psyched for the album. I mean, when you see…

… you’d assume you’re in for a treat.

I’d like everyone to know that this is no half-arsed review. I listened to this album for hoursss and tried to avoid Twitter till I finished this review.

Before I played RECKLESS my arms were in the air cos INTRO TO THE FOURTH ALBUMMM!!! As the drums dropped and I started hearing “inna inna”, I knew wahala had shown face. The song in summary is saying “I started from the bottom, now I can do anyhow” and the song is clearly “anyhow” lmao. After four minutes of sadness, I moved to GINGER (ft. Burna Boy). The song's chorus basically translates - from Yoruba - to “Give me the key, I’ll eat you out. Don’t dull.” Now, Wizkid makes the lyrics more interesting by saying “ma kan je e bi jollof”. Why use one of my favourite meals to express oral sex? Why Wizzy? Whyyyyyy???😭😫 That aside, the beat switch towards the ending… bruh! It’s not the sleekest but it is cleannn and Burna boy killed it. His cadence and vocal is too perfect. My favourite part of the song, easy.

Next up, LONGTIME (ft. Skepta). I got me hyped. Baba Skeppy! Has to be Wizkid that wrote his verse cos I’ve never heard thug nigga with corny lines and mid bars. The rap didn’t even fit into this song (abi is it just me?) MIGHTY WINE is the first song on this album that passes a 5/10. The chorus carries the song so much and that “dance” gives me chills. Erm, that’s all.

BLESSED sounds like a curse and I don’t understand why Damian Marley is on it. Also the only song so far that doesn’t have sexual shots - obvious or hidden. I have a problem with SMILE (ft. H.E.R.) being this long. Over 4 mins? When it’s making me frown? I think the libido is resting; this is the second song with no obvious sexual shot(s). PIECE OF ME (ft. ELLA MAI) is a skip.

NO STRESS! Yes! And the sexual shots have resumed. Notice that Wizzy didn’t do sexual songs with the international acts. Listening to TRUE LOVE, Tay Iwar should be global.

Tay Iwar.

The talent. The vocal range. The technicality. It pleases my ears. Then we get to Wizkid’s verse. “fuck” “baby” “moves” “control”. All I’m asking for is better content. Projexx too carry his big head and did his sexual verse with accent BUT it’s better and honestly, I like it. His voice and accent seals the deal. SWEET ONE’s beat is not for Wizkid, let’s be honest. I feel he didn’t sound nice.

It’s safe to now say that Made In Lagos is actually Made For The Bedroom.

I don’t think Tems and Wizkid sync well on ESSENCE and I’ll call the mixer out on that. This song is too mid dfkm. But you see ROMA, I don’t understand what it means but Wizkid and Terri ate that beat up afro-style and I’m pleased. It's like Wizkid brings his A-game when using 4 letter words that we don’t understand: “Joro”, “Roma”, “Soco”.

From the mumbles in GYRATE, one can hear Wizkid rejecting the evil spirit of saying weird things. Why? London made the beat! Guys, this is the song that you play for babe(s), in your air conditioned car, on the way to your place for proper knacks😈. Again, this is a very very good beat!

As children of God, we end the album with the GRACE. Wizkid talks about his come up, his struggles, his bad bitches, his race and most of all, his grace. A pleasant way to end the album.

Personal favorites are Ginger, Mighty Wine, True Love, Roma and Gyrate. I believe the best song is Gyrate. I believe the most technically pleasing song is True Love.

I believe the album is a solid 6.5/10

Additional info:

- 10 songs out of 14 are sexually driven.

- The song lengths are annoying since they’re mostly repetition or loop.

 - On social media, people are saying Starboy wrote all the songs himself asides SMILE because there are no credits to other writers.

- Nuh linga means don’t waste time with whatever you’re doing, but Starboy gave it a new meaning in RECKLESS. I hail a King!

Why I Love: Ted Lasso

The sports genre in film and on TV is quite popular if you really think about it. We see tons of shows and movies on basketball almost yearly yet ironically, the world’s most popular sport Football (no, I’m not talking about American rugby) hardly gets represented on our screens. Apple TV remedies that by introducing us to Ted Lasso, a beautiful show that is definitely going to be the Renaissance for Football in scripted media.  This post will be an addition to my “why I love” series and isn’t going to spoil anything substantial. With that being said, let’s begin;    Ted Lasso is an Apple TV original that is loosely based on the NBC short “An American Coach In London” with a seminar premise from almost a decade ago. The premise being, An American football (not the real football) coach comes to England to coach a traditional football team with zero experience. The most noticeable difference between the two is that the NBC short is simply a sketch and doesn’t t...

Severance: An Unforgettable Thriller

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you didn't remember the stress of your workplace when you get home? From the mind of Dan Erickson, directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle, Severance offers an answer to the aforementioned question and pushes the limit by asking " when your consciousness is spilt into two, which one is the real you? " The series follows a severed employee at Lumon, Mark who has recently been promoted to the Head of Microdata and Refinement Department after the sudden resignation of his boss and the recruitment of a new employee, Helly Riggs. Plot Severance has a unique plot, while the execution of a series without a definite blueprint can prove difficult, it does not fall into this hole. The series answers (almost)all the questions it poses in the first few episodes but ends on a note that will leave you spiraling and brimming with inquisitiveness.  Characters For every character, we follow two distinct ...

First Listen: Lil Yachty - Let's Start Here.

woah. brother broccoli starts 2023 with something totally unexpected: a psychedelic rock album. lil yachty said in an interview (with someone i don't remember) that he just wants to be taken seriously, as a musician. it's a little sad when someone puts their all into a craft, sometimes even create a groundbreaking sound, but still get termed the bare minimum or worse, "mumble rapper." while this album is beautiful, it's not as stellar as other projects in the same genre. but music is more than that. it's also the process, emotions, message, etc. brother broccoli took a risk to make what he wants/feels and he succeeded. that's what makes this album a beauty asides the wonky ai art and trying-hard-to-stay-in-the-flow lyricism . the features ate. the producers brought their a-game. the engineers blessed the record. since poland, it's clear that yachty decided to broaden his scope and make not just music he loves, but quality. i definitely respect his art...

First Listen: Hamond - Pirate Radio

since i heard  windows , i have been sloppy on Hamond.  Pirate Radio  is almost everything i imagine indie pop to be. it's glittery, experimental, vocal, and hard work. half the time, i don't even understand his poetry but it sounds so  damn good . the other half explores experiences of failed/failing relationships, problematic partners, and misplaced gaiety. storytelling like this always gets me into a frenzy, especially with fitting production.  the unconventional mix and production sets this art piece aside from the rest within its genre. especially the drums. nothing cliché with his lyrics or style of music. just pure, honest music that makes me bust some ass to his misfortune. 😀 mehn, it is definitely one of the better listens from 2022. give it a spin?
