If you haven’t seen black panther,I don’t think you’d understand this post because I’ll be talking about things that happened rather than explaining them like most spoiler reviews. With that being said,let us march on.
We saw the bright side of wakanda as well as it’s hidden dark history and so now,its time to talk about. I’ll start of by talking about who everyone is talking about and that is no one else but Erik Killmonger.
Erik Killmonger and Ulysyss Klaw are now my favorite villains. In fact, unlike many I actually preferred Klaw as a villain but maybe that was because Killmonger was more of an antagonist(yes,they can be different)to me. Klaw just wanted vibranium so he could fuck shit up but Erik’s grievance was more personal and it challenged T’challa’s ideals because who Erik had become was a result of his father’s(King T’chaka) mistake I’ll go into that in a bit.
Black Panther shows us just how impressive Wakanda is because it’s a technologically driven country that manages to still be grounded in it’s tradition. It also shows us how diverse it is by showing us the several tribes during T’challa’s coronation at the beginning of the film. As the film shows,M’baku of the mabari tribe attempts this but fails as T’challa manages to not only defeat him,but also spare his life.
There is a traditional and very african mystic vibe going in this film. T’challa was given this mystic herb(I cant remember the name)which connects him to all the previous panthers and gives him their strength and wisdom(from my assumption at least). The ceremonial herb is stripped out of him during challenges because with it,he is superior and possess an edge over his rival.
The women in black panther were great particularly Okoye and Shuri because they show that women can be superior over men physically and intellectually. Shuri is such a delight,she is smart,kind,funny and a warrior at heart and way way more genius than Tony Stark. Okoye is just fierce and steals every scene shes in. She made this particular line about how primitive guns are and for a moment it kind of reminded me of the steppenwolf line from the underwhelming justice league movie.
Okoye was amazing throughout this film in all aspects except her relationship with W'kabi because i couldn't have a thing with him because he betrayed his best friend because he couldn't capture Klaw and he didn't flinch when T'challa was supposedly killed by Killmonger. To me,W'kabi deserved to die because he considered himself before his people. i felt it was bad writing that he stopped his rhino because of Okoye because that is quite anti climatic. Did he not consider her before? hopefully he becomes a full villain because even M'baku is more of a best friend to T'challa.
Now they were a couple of things that provoked me a lot and I’d like to talk about that;
Killmonger kills klaw and I know its meant to make him more menacing but I saw it as a really dumb moves. Klaw was similar to Heath’s joker in the sense that he just wants to see wakanda destroyed and that is the perfect villain for a king who’s trying to protect his people the same way Batman in the dark knight was trying to protect Gotham city. So why kill him? Why kill a villain who not only is a well known enemy of wakanda,but also is very entertaining and unpredictable(I mean the man sang no love during an interrogation…come on marvel!). I am actually very surprised that he isn’t getting equal buzz as Killmonger because Andy Serkis dominated this role from the accent to the mannerisms and the creepy laugh. #BringKlawBack.
Turns out T’challa and Erik are cousins instead of brothers and Erik lost his father N'jobu because King T’chaka out of fear of his ambition of using wakanda’s vibranium to rule the earth and his attempt on Zuri's life. First of this film needed to be about 150 minutes long to flesh out characters like Killmonger. For instance when he presents klaw’s body to W'kabi, I feel like he should have befriended the indigenes as well as at least have real a conversation with T’challa wear he explains his plan in a less aggressive way. I understood his aggression because of that scene he had with his father. That scene also needed to be stretched out because damn,that shit hit me right in my chest(I do not have a heart…muahahahahaha).
We didn’t get any backstory for his girlfriend and that’s not a bad thing per say but I mean him not really caring after she died didn’t phase me because she was only in like one scene.
Ø THE ENDING
For the most part of the film,we see how T’challa wants the best for his people so I was surprised when he decided to reveal the true wakanda(wakanda in all its technological might)to the rest of the world. His father idea of hiding wakanda from the world was not a bad one,his mistake was killing his brother and ambandoning his nephew. If wakanda is known to the world,it only just opens the world to more klaw’s who will do anything in their power to obtain the vibranium which means more risks to wakanda citizens. Maybe its just me who thinks so sha(nigerian slang that can be used instead of though). Also I saw no reason why T’challa didn’t help killmonger by force.
I also finished the film asking myself a couple of questions like;
l If wakanda is isolated from the rest of the world,how do they get their wealth?
l Where were Captain America and Bucky? Or does the civil war end credit scene take place after black panther?
l How exactly did killmonger locate wakanda?
l How did Howard Stark get his hand on vibranium?
l Did T’challa have the powers of the previous panthers during civil war or was it all natural?
l How do they armoured rhinos work? Were they trained? Can vibra….okay this one is dumb. They were trained.
Black Panther is very enjoyable,it is story and character driven, its quite short to me and sometimes misses chances and opportunities to truly go where no marvel film has gone before. All in all after thinking about it I give it a solid 8.1 over 10 for being unique and relatable at the same time. I want to see more from the world of wakanda.
