First Listen: Hamond - Pirate Radio

since i heard windows, i have been sloppy on Hamond.

Pirate Radio is almost everything i imagine indie pop to be. it's glittery, experimental, vocal, and hard work. half the time, i don't even understand his poetry but it sounds so damn good. the other half explores experiences of failed/failing relationships, problematic partners, and misplaced gaiety. storytelling like this always gets me into a frenzy, especially with fitting production.

the unconventional mix and production sets this art piece aside from the rest within its genre. especially the drums. nothing cliché with his lyrics or style of music. just pure, honest music that makes me bust some ass to his misfortune. 😀

mehn, it is definitely one of the better listens from 2022. give it a spin?

Samurai Champloo: Why Is It So Good?

In the year 2005, the anime community had one of their gems; Samurai Champloo come out. Its well written and set in an extremely lively version of old school (Edo) japan. Its storyline is simple, two extremely skilled yet very different swordsmen Mugen and Jin have fate bring them across a young outspoken lady Fuu who helps them out of a tough spot and insist on them accompany her to find the very vaguely named “samurai who smells of sunflowers”. This serves as the catalyst that carries us on a well voiced, animated, and extremely stylistic adventure across japan towards the course of its 20 plus episode run. Here are some of the reasons I think Samurai Champloo is so enjoyable   1. TONE AND SETTING: One of the reasons it works so well is that even with its fictional story, its grounded in reality without being overly dramatic or serious. Most films, shows and games based off old eras like this usually take themselves super serious and in the process turn out being bla...

Euphoria: Back With A Bang!

After taking the world by storm in 2019, critically acclaimed HBO phenomenon Euphoria returns with its second season and from the looks of the premiere episode, it’s going to make its debut season look like child’s play.  Please note, there might be mild spoilers ahead The first episode of Euphoria’s sophomore season starts off like previous episodes, with an opening containing background info on a specific character and this time around, it’s none other than super chill fan favorite Fez. We get to find out about how his childhood was, how his surrogate little brother Ashtray came about and why he does what he does. As someone who already loved Fez before this, I have to say having more insight on his background really adds more depth to his character.  After our flashback opening the story moves to the new year which is after the Rue euphoria special which took place in Christmas where she went to a diner with Ali to talk about her life and issues with substance abuse....

HATING ON AD ASTRA

Ad Astra is a space movie. It tries to depict what could be the future advancement of humanity and technology. It is a James Gray movie led by Brad Pitt that does not deserve to be seen more than twice. The second watch being a stretch. In all my life, I don't remember taking three days to finish a movie. I saw Justice League, End Game, The Godfather I and II, etc in one sitting, but not Ad Astra. While some might argue that the pace is perfect, I counter, asking, "To what end?"  Ad Astra is a space movie revolving around Roy McBride and unresolved daddy issues that somehow eats badly into his life. Notwithstanding, he's required to get to Neptune and stop a surge that could end human life. Brad Pitt delivers a stellar performance on what cold feels and sounds like with the material he's provided. I will now begin my hate. The music composition is one of the worst space movie compositions as it lacks originality and observable niche. It's a strivin...

Sex Education

Sex Education is Netflix's latest addition to their list of unique top notch quality shows. Sex Education is a relevant coming of age show that revolves around teenage sexuality and it's complexities. I feel like most movies or shows that try to tackle subject matter like this end up focusing on glorious sex rather than the very common awkwardness that leads up to it. Sex Education is very raw and authentic, I say this because I relate to it based on the fact that I am a pervert and also a pubescent man-baby.   Sixteen Year Old Otis is an awkward teen living with his mother who happens to be a sex therapist.  Otis's best friend Eric is an openly gay boy in school and he's extremely funny and their friendship is true and strong. When The Headmaster's son who's known for being a big prick both literally and figuratively takes sexual enhancement drugs in order to be able to have great pleasure but he actually takes too much and ends up having an er...
