Now,back when I saw the trailer, I simply thought "this is looks like a very cool comedy" and trust me it was but,the film itself is so much more.
The film tells the story of Cassius "Cash" a broke and woke black man who's looking for a job to provide for himself and his girlfriend Detroit(that's right, Detroit),A hilarious and creative artist.
He gets a job as a telemarketer but he's not very good at it because he doesn't know how to convince people on the phone into buying from the company. Then, he gets advice to use his "white voice" and although he finds the thought of a white voice to be outrageously absurd, he tries it out and gains massive success in his office and that's when the film thoroughly dives into crazy brilliance.
The film uses exaggerated humour with things like the white voice and subliminal messages which aren't really subliminal through interviews from people rioting about a company known as "Worryfree" . A company that gives people life time contracts for labour work in return for little money and food. They're basically modern day enslavers and also happen to own the telemarketing company that Cash works at.It mirrors our real world in the sense that even though celebrities or rich companies tell the people that they're toxic and they're negatively impacting them, people keep on being addicted to those companies and celebrities. Take social media for instance, companies like facebook keep buying new social media outlets and expanding their brand and keeping people hooked on the drug that is social life.
The film also goes out of its way to not only represent modern day slavery thematically but also show it in the literal sense. The way the idea is introduced was actually bizarre but as it goes on, it actually gets you thinking. You clearly see what the writers are trying to show you and it makes you feel like this isn't really any different from the World we're actually living in which is just very very sad.
Sorry to bother you is a dramatic comedy that sheds light on the reality of life in an exaggerated manner that would sound dumb if you probably read the script and thankfully, every actor in this thing kills it and makes this world feel real which in turn makes us take the film as something more than a comedy....especially after the third act. I really feel like it could win a lot of awards and I really really think Lakeith could win best actor with this performance, hopefully.
This film blew my mind too much for me to give it one outro speech. Sorry to bother you is a film that has a huge mind boggling twist that will make you feel you're high. I don't even know if me saying that might underwhelm the twist but either way you'll be surprised. The thing is,the film is just so well written and excellently directed.
Without the great direction, it wouldn't work because honestly, this film shouldn't work and the fact that it works is mind blowing.
That's a wrap guys!. Go see the movie and share this with your friends and families. It's my birthday today so it would mean the world if you commented and shared! Bye!
