I’ll be posting an actual review of the movie tomorrow because I want to watch it again but for today I want to talk about how the characters from this movie were pretty much all epic fails.
If you have watched the anime or read the manga then get ready because Netflix basically changed a ton of things and ruined Death Note. They are a bunch of things that do not make sense or are executed the way it was supposed to be,but for now let’s start with the main characters;
LIGHT TURNER
This is an American adaptation set in America so I guess the last name change isn’t part of the bad things(trust me ,they are bad things). This Light isn’t very much like the brilliant, cold and manipulative Light Yagami you know,on the other hand he is awkward teenager in high school trying to fit in and not get bullied(you know,like the cliché American movie Teen) and he was not an A student and the actor portraying him did not do him justice at all and all we got was just forced use of the ‘F’ word..I guess they were trying to make him Edgy?.
His first encounter with Ryuk the Shinigami was over exaggerated and he just kept screaming and trying to run away and it honestly pissed me off. According to this movie, Light lost his mother when a criminal and managed to get away with it. This light is the only child and lives with hi father who is a police detective. He only started killing people because a certain “god of death” influenced him(I’ll get back to that later). Light did not want to kill anyone who wasn’t a criminal and although this was how it started in the manga and anime series,he quickly started killing people just to cover his tracks,this Light did not do any of that and on the contrary it was his partner Mia(a new name for Misa)who did all this and this did not change at all. Basically guys they turned Light into a very boring character and he was the worst part of the entire movie.
MIA(Misa Amane)
If you were looking forward to how Light would come in contact to the super model obsessed with him and who also happens to have her own Shinagami,am sorry, this isn’t your movie. In this new take,she is a student who goes to the same school and Light and also gets turned when killing criminals.
Honestly she was a better Light than the Light in this movie,she was ruthless and seriously willing to do whatever it took to not get caught and that included killing a bunch of cops. Immediately Light showed her the power of the note she became obsessed with killing enough criminals and when L came around she did everything possible to kill him. So I commend the actress who played her for being a better light than the actual Light(Natt should have played Mia). Through the pan of the film, she and Light start an unconvincing romance all because they hate criminals and It was stupid but I rolled with it. Like I said earlier she was a better Light than Light,she was the one telling Light what to do and it made no sense. If this was an original movie by Netflix I would like her character a bit more but knowing what her role was meant to be made me see her as a disappointment
RYUK
William Defoe was not enough to save death note,his voice acting was great but they changed part of Ryuk's character trait. First of Ryuk in this movie basically made Light write his first name and Ryuk is just meant to just tell Light about the note and not make him use it. What am trying to say is Light didn't need Ryuk's influence,everything he did should have started with him and him alone and by trying so hard to humanize Light they ended up ruining Ryuk. This Ryuk kept telling Light he was not interested in how he used the note yet,he always butt in and always tried to influence Light's actions,an example of this was the verbal confrontation between Light and L.
Ryuk was okay if you think about it but still not great but he was definitely better than Light and trust me,that is a good thing.
L
L was not bad,I actually liked him up until when he started getting to emotional and letting his anger get the best of him. The actor who played him certainly did his homework because he pulled of L's speech pattern and mannerisms i think he over did L's love for sweets but no biggie,he was good and for those who complained about his skin i understand why because L is very pale skinned. The whole knowing L was kira made no sense here honestly because they did not go deep,they also threw away his friendship with L and also gave him a backstory of training to be one of the greatest detectives?
He also wasn't very resourceful and his reaction to the dumb watari plot was not very L like.
Aside from that and him trying to use the gun at the end and use a page from the note, i'd give him a solid 6/10 on his portrayal and i think he wasn't really bad.
I'll be posting an actual review to the movie tomorrow so don't forget to check that out
Thanks again for reading my posts guys,it means a lot. Please keep doing what you do and please,please and please....comment snd share guys!!!
